Advice on Cleaning Stains

Stain Removal Ideas

Always test new cleaning solutions on a hidden area of any surface or fabric before you use it; some cleansers can remove color or create new stains.

Fruit Stains in Clothing

To remove fruit juice stains from colorfast clothing items, stretch the stained area over a bowl and pour boiling water onto it. Repeat as needed.

How to Remove Egg Stains

Remove egg stains from fabric with lukewarm water, since heat can harden the stain. For difficult stains try cleanser with sodium percarbonate.

Ink Stain Removal

To remove a ball-point ink stain from washable clothing, soak the area with an alcohol-based hair spray. Blot the stain thoroughly, repeat, and wash.

Grout Stains

Need a quick cleanser for a stain on your countertops or grout? Use automatic dishwashing detergent for cleaning stains. Be careful however if your counter has a polished finish since the detergent can be abrasive and might scratch.

Hydrogen Peroxide for Blood Stains

Use hydrogen peroxide to remove bloodstains from colorfast fabrics. It can often be used to clean blood from clothing and carpeting as well.

Crayon Marks on the Wall

Ammonia will usually remove crayon marks from wall paint. Otherwise, try a little toothpaste (paste varieties, not the gel kind) on a clean white rag for cleaning stains.

Oil Stains on Clothing

To remove salad or cooking oil stains in clothing, use a little rubbing alcohol to break up the stain before washing; the sooner you apply the alcohol, the better.

Cleaning Wallpaper Marks

Use an art-gum eraser to take many types of dry marks off of wallpaper. If you don't have an eraser, use a wadded up piece of bread.

Salt for Tablecloth Stains

If something is spilled on the tablecloth when you are entertaining, pour salt on the spill to help prevent it from staining.
