Answer a Science Question

What is Plastic?

Plastic was invented in the 19th century. It is a polymer product made of strands of nylon. Plastics are popular because they can be stretched, molded, melted or woven into strands making it the perfect material for numerous products.

What is a Black Hole?

Although you can not see a black hole, in theory they do exist. It is so dense that light can not escape from it, making it invisible to the naked eye.

A black hole is the remains of a collapsed star. When the star collapses in on itself, it creates a powerful gravitational pull. The gravity of a black hole is so powerful nothing can escape from its forces.

What is the Sun Made of?

The sun is a giant ball of gas (hydrogen) that is continually exploding. It emits light because the hydrogen atoms smash into each other creating photons. In the process of creating these photons, heat and energy is created, which is the light.

What is an Atom?

Everything is made up of atoms, tiny particles which often bond together in groups to create molecules. An atom is so small you can not see one.

If you think of an atom as a ball, the center is called the nucleus. The nucleus is surrounded by different layers called shells.

What is Lightning?

During a storm, you may have noticed a bright streak of light that looks like a thunderbolt flash across the sky. This is lightning. What you are seeing is a flash of electricity.

Way up in the sky there is a thundercloud filled with frozen raindrops (ice). These frozen raindrops bump against each other creating an electrical charge. Soon the cloud is full of these electrical charges. Positive charges float to the top of the cloud and negative charges sink to the bottom. These positive and negative charges cause a positive charge which builds up on the ground directly beneath the cloud.

As soon as the cloud connects with a conductor (anything that sticks up like a telephone pole or antennae), the charges connect to the item creating a ZAP.

What Causes Thunder?

Lightning causes thunder. When lightening strikes, it heats up the air to 50,000 degrees Fahrenheit. The lightning is so hot that this happens in less then a second. This process causes the air to quickly expand. The air quickly cools and contracts, creating shock waves, which we hear as thunder.

Why is Venus Brighter than Mercury

Venus is a larger planet than Mercury. Venus is 7,700 miles in diameter compared to Mercury’s 3,100 miles in diameter, which also means Venus is easier to see because it is larger.

To help it out, Venus is surrounded by an atmosphere made of clouds of carbon dioxide which reflect light making the planet shine brightly. Mercury, on the other hand, has no atmosphere to reflect light.

Venus also approaches closer to Earth than Mercury.

What Does a Cloud Feel Like?

Believe it or not, if you were in a cloud, you would most likely not even realize it except for the haziness of the air. In fact, fog is simply a cloud on the ground. You may feel some moisture, but a cloud won’t feel soft and fluffy like you may imagine it would.

Does a Strawberry Taste the Same for Everyone?

No. Everyone has a different taste experience. That is why some people like spicy food, while others like sweet.

Your taste buds are connected to nerves that send messages about the food including taste, temperature and texture to the brain. Some people have more sensitive taste buds then others.
