What is the Infield Fly Rule?

This rule is designed to prevent the fielders from gaining an advantage by letting an easy infield pop fly drop to the ground instead of catching the ball. The rule is enforced by an umpire in situations where there are no outs, or only one out, and there is a force play at third base (meaning runners on first and second, or bases loaded). If the umpire determines that the pop fly is catchable, then the batter is automatically out.

Answer to a Baseball Question: What is a Ground Rule Double?

This is a rule that covers what happens when the ball leaves the field. The most common way this rule is enforced is when the ball lands in fair territory in the outfield and then bounces over the outfield fence, preventing the outfielders from retrieving the ball. When this happens, the batter and all base runners advance two bases. Each ballpark can have ground rules unique to it, such as an indoor field having a rule if the ball hits a speaker or the roof.

What is a Balk?

A balk is a move by a pitcher that is ruled by the umpire to be deceptive to the base runners. It is only possible for a balk to be called when a runner is on base. The most common moves that result in a balk include: the pitcher starting to throw the pitch and then suddenly stops, the pitcher faking a throw to first without throwing to first, the pitcher dropping the ball after beginning the pitching motion, and making a pitch while facing away from the batter.

How Do I Select a Baseball Glove?

The position you play will determine if you need a special glove, such as a catcher's mitt or a first baseman's glove, or if you should consider a glove most suited for the infield or outfield. Infielders need a smaller glove to make it easier to quickly remove the ball from the glove. Outfielders should have a larger glove for catching pop flies. Try the glove on, as the feel of the glove is very important.

How Do I Break-in a Baseball Glove?

There is no right or wrong answer to a baseball question like this. There are many methods that will work, and not everyone agrees on which method is the best. The basics, however, are to soften the leather and create a pocket. To soften the leather, try rubbing one of the following into the glove: foam shaving cream, Vaseline, baseball glove oil sold by the manufacturer or saddle soap. Form a pocket by putting a baseball or softball inside the glove and closing the glove around the ball with shoelaces, rope or a belt.

How Can You Calculate Your Batting Average?

First, add up how many hits you have. Next, determine the number of times you've been at bat. An "at bat" is when you either safely hit the ball, when you hit an out, or when you strikeout. Divide your number of hits by your number of at bats. Round the answer to the third decimal place.

How to Calculate Your Earned Run Average (ERA)?

First, determine how many innings you have pitched. Each out recorded is equal to one-third of an inning. Next, add up the total number of earned runs while you were pitching and multiply the earned runs by nine. Take this amount and divide it by your innings pitched. Finally, round the number to the second decimal place.

What Happens if a Base Runner is Hit by the Ball?

If the runner is hit by a batted ball, before the ball is either touched or passed by an infielder, then the runner is out and the batter is given a hit.

What is a No-Hitter?

A no-hitter is when the pitcher doesn't allow a hit during the entire game. The pitcher can, however, allow walks and have unearned base runners and still earn a no-hitter. A perfect game is when no one reaches base for any reason.

What is a Rally Cap?

The players and fans of the team that is losing will wear their baseball hats inside-out while hoping or praying that their team can come from behind and win. It is believed that wearing the cap in a different way will bring good fortune.
