How are Uniform Numbers Selected?

Each player gets to choose their number, provided it falls within the guidelines established by the NFL and does not already belong to someone else on the team. Often players will try and keep the same number they had in college. The guidelines allow the following range of numbers for each position:

  • 1-9 Quarterbacks and Kickers
  • 10-19 Quarterbacks, Receivers and Kickers
  • 20-49 Running Backs and Defensive Backs
  • 50-59 Centers and Linebackers
  • 60-79 Offensive Lineman and Defensive Lineman
  • 80-89 Receivers and Tight Ends
  • 90-99 Defensive Lineman and Linebackers

Answer to a Football Question: What is a Nickel and Dime Defense?

If you’ve ever watched a football game on TV, you are likely to hear one of the announcers mention that the defense is in a nickel or dime formation. This means that the defense is predicting that the offense will pass the ball instead of run. Nickel means there are five defensive backs playing (since defensive backs cover the offense’s wide receivers), and dime means there are six.

Normally, the defense only has four defensive backs on the field.

What is the Difference Between a 4-3 Defense and a 3-4 Defense?

The terms 4-3 and 3-4 refer to how many defensive lineman, and how many linebackers, are playing.

  • In the 4-3, there are four defensive lineman and three linebackers.
  • The 3-4 defense is just the opposite.

The 4-3 is the most widely used defense because it makes it harder for the offense to run the ball. However, some successful teams, including the New England Patriots and the Pittsburgh Steelers, use the 3-4.

How to Throw a Spiral

Start by properly gripping the football. If you have small hands, place your ring finger in the first open slot between the seams along the top of the football. Then put your pinky finger in the third slot. If you have a larger hand, use the second and fourth slots.

Next, put your thumb on the underside of the ball so that you are gripping it with your entire hand. When squeezing the ball, only use your thumb, ring finger and pinky. Your other two fingers should just rest on the ball. Once you have the right grip, then bring the ball up toward your ear, on the side of your body that is holding the ball. Use your other hand to help balance the ball. Move your arm forward and release the ball. Continue following through with your arm after the release. Finish with your hand near your pants pocket on the opposite side of your body. Try flicking your wrist during the release to get a tighter spiral.

Why is a Football Called a Pigskin?

The answer to a football question like this is fairly gross. The original footballs were made from pig’s skins--the pig’s bladder, to be more specific. It was possible to fill the bladder up with air and then tie a knot to prevent the air from leaking out. This was done back in the 1800’s, before footballs were manufactured using synthetic leather and rubber. But, if you look on the modern football, you’ll still see reference to the bladder.

Who Won the First Super Bowl?

The Green Bay Packers defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 35 to 10. The game was played January 15, 1967, at the Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles.

What is the History of the Super Bowl?

In the early history of professional football, there was just one league, called the National Football League (NFL). In 1960, a rival league called the American Football League (AFL) was formed. From 1960 through 1966, the winners of the NFL and the AFL didn’t play each other.

In 1967 that finally changed when the winners of both leagues played in what was called the “AFL-NFL World Championship Game.” In 1970 the two leagues merged. The NFL teams became known as the National Football Conference (NFC) and the AFL teams became the American Football Conference (AFC). The championship game between the two conferences was later renamed the Super Bowl.

What is the 2-Minute Offense?

The 2-Minute offense refers to the way the offense plays in the final two minutes of each half of the game if they are losing. Depending on how far behind the team is; the 2-minute offense may begin even earlier in the game. The strategy is to the pass the ball and run out-of-bounds to stop the clock. Calling running plays is not used as much since they use more time than passing plays. By passing and preserving the clock, the offense hopes to score before time runs out.

What is the West Coast Offense?

The West Coast Offense is a modern offense that is often attributed to Bill Walsh, who was the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers. The offense puts an emphasis on throwing short passes, with running being secondary. Traditional offenses put emphasis on running, with long passes being secondary.
