| When an interviewer ask you to tell him or her about yourself, there are a couple of different purposes. First, the interviewer wants to see whether or not you have actually put some thought into preparing for an interview. "Tell me about yourself" is one of the most commonly asked interview questions, so interviewers expect that applicants will be ready for this question. If you have no clue how to respond when this question is posed, the interviewer is most likely going to assume that you didn't take the interview seriously.
Second, interviewers make assumptions about the type of employee you are going to be based on the way you answer this type of question. If you say something like, "I really like to travel and I can't wait until I can retire," chances are the employer is going to assume you aren't going to be that dedicated of a worker. There is nothing wrong with liking to travel, and most people look forward to retirement. However, if that's how you choose to respond to the "tell me about yourself" question in an interview, your work ethic may be brought into question. Be honest, and focus on something that will tell the interviewer what kind of employee you will be.
Try something like, "I'm a very hard worker and I've always wanted to work in a hospital. I'm really looking forward to helping patients handle their insurance claims as a member of your billing department." This type of response lets the interviewer know that you understand the job, you want the job, and you took time to prepare appropriately for the interview. - posted by Mary G. White
