| Question: My poor Lab is itching like crazy and now is actually biting off pieces of his own fur! He doesn't have fleas..I think it may be some sort of allergy. I took him to the vet and the vet gave him some anti-biotics but its not getting better and he is tearing more and more of the fur off his rear-end. | The first thing you should do is call your vet and describe the continued behavior to see if he or she has any suggestions about what to try next. It sounds like your dog may have some sort of allergy. I know someone whose dog exhibited these types of symptoms and it turned out to be allergy to beef. My friend discovered the allergy by eliminating foods that contain ingredients that dogs tend to be allergic to. You may want to ask your vet for food suggestions, or inquire at your local pet supply store. - posted by Mary G. White

| A question I have for you is how you are sure you dog has low blood sugar. What you consider to be the symptoms of low blood sugar could actually be signs that there is another problem. It isn't uncommon for dogs to develop diabetes, and other illnesses that mimic the symptoms of low blood sugar. Of course, if your dog is dehydrated, you should first make sure he or she takes in plenty of water. You should take your dog to the vet, so you can get a medical opinion on what is causing the low blood sugar symptoms and to find out if your pup's dehydration problem requires more than just water. - posted by Mary G. | Hi Hardy - I had a dog who had this problem in the early 1990s. He was diagnosed with allergies. The vet gave him some sort of eye drops and the problem cleared up almost immediately. My best advice to you is to take your dog to the vet. In the best case scenario, the problem will be as easy to clear up as the issue my dog had. However, there is always a chance that your dog has a serious eye infection, and may need a different type of treatment. Either way, your dog will need to be seen by a vet. Taking your pup to the vet right away is the best thing to do. - posted by Mary G. White

| Your dog could have injured her foot or leg when she landed after jumping off your sofa. If she doesn't start walking normally right away, the best thing for you to do is take her to the vet. | Assuming that your pet swallowed a relatively small wrapper and piece of chocolate, his or her digestive system will likely take care of it naturally. If your dog is very tiny, or if it was a huge piece of foil and a lot of chocolate, you will need to call your vet. | If your pet is not eating, I recommend taking him to the vet. Not eating is often a sign that something else is going on. Also take a look at when this happened, and what changes have occured in your pet's life when you noticed the change. - posted by Debbie LaCroix
