DIY Building Advice – First Steps

Before you start your do-it-yourself project, there are a few things that you should do. By following these first steps, you can not only save yourself money but also ensure that you do not make costly mistakes.

  • Check with Your City

The very first thing you should do is take a trip down to city hall and find out about inspections, permits, licenses and fees that may need to be taken care of before you drive one nail into one board. By skipping this step, you open yourself up to fines and being “red tagged.” That means that work will not be able to be resumed until you have the proper permits and inspections. By taking an hour to do this ahead of time you will be able to move ahead with fewer set backs.

  • Figure Your Budget

How much can you realistically afford to spend on your DIY project? Often a building project will run ten to fifteen percent above what it is estimated so figure that in as well.

  • Estimate Your Ability

If you have never built anything before you might want to get some experienced help before you start tearing down walls. You can learn many things from a book but solid experience is invaluable.

  • Have a Plan

Have a plan for exactly what you are going to do. If your project is small and you don't need a blueprint at least have a sketch and some notes to go by.

  • Make a Materials List

There is nothing worse than having to stop in the middle of a project and head to the store to pick up extra nails or a two by four. Buy everything you need, and add a little extra for insurance. Maybe a board will crack or nails will bend. You can circumvent frustration by having a little extra on hand.

Starting Your Project

Once you have the basics down the DIY building advice gets a little more specific.

Safety First

Don't take chances with your health. Always use proper safety equipment for the project that you are doing.

  • Safety glasses
  • Work gloves
  • Ear plugs
  • Dust mask
  • Work boots
  • Fire extinguisher

Tools

Keep all of your blades sharp and your tools in good repair. This will make them more efficient and safer to use.

  • Rent What You Need

Before you get started, rent any specialized tools that you will need. A dumpster is a necessity if you are doing a large building or remodeling project.

Prioritize

If you are not sure which project to do first consider each project individually. The items at the top of the list should be those things that put your family's safety at risk. After that, you should consider projects that keep your home from damage, and then those that add value.

Easy DIY Projects

Here are some ideas for the beginner. Most people can do these with just a little instruction. Remember that many home improvement stores like Home Depot give free classes on the weekends. Check with your local store to see what is available in your area.

  • Tiling

Installing tile is not difficult to do and most beginners can do this successfully with a little instruction.

  • Decks

Building a deck is a large project but it is not a difficult one.

  • Adding Storage

Creating or improving storage space is an excellent do it yourself project.

  • Building a Shed

Building a storage or potting shed on your property is a great way to get some practical building experience.

  • Finishing a Basement

Many people finish out their basements to create playrooms, game rooms, or other types of spaces for their families. This can add value as well as space to your home.

Know When to Throw in the Towel

The best DIY building advice of all is to be ready to call in expert help when you need to. Don't be afraid to admit that you have taken on a bit more than you can handle. The important thing is that your project is completed safely and properly.
