Day Trading Advice
Profitable, but Risky
Day trading can be profitable, but it is risky. Some day traders are very successful; to do well at day trading, a person must be very well versed in the market he or she is trading in. Most day traders opt to buy and sell stocks or work the foreign exchange (forex) market.
Risk
Only risk the money you can afford to lose. There is no guarantee that a day trader will make any money. It's important to have a certain sum of money available separate from what is needed to cover living expenses to trade with.
Trading Strategy
Successful day traders adopt a trading strategy and stick to it. Over time, the day trader will find strategies that have proven successful. By staying the course and continuing to trade according to this plan, the odds of losing money can be greatly reduced.
Do Your Homework
Take the time to educate yourself about how the markets work and the different factors that can effect a particular market's performance.
Analytical Software
Analytical software is available to help you. Software with the capability of tracking patterns, making virtually instantaneous trades, and predicting price movements is pricey, but day traders consider it to be a necessary part of doing business.
Some software packages give the day trader the ability to do back testing. Back testing refers to examining how a strategy would have worked in the past; this may be helpful in predicting future outcomes. There are no guarantees, however, that a past performance will duplicate itself in the future.
Dummy Account
If you decide that you want to venture into foreign exchange (forex) trading, find a broker that will let you get started with a dummy account. You can practice trades until you get to the point where you are making more (virtual) money than you are losing. At that point, you can choose to start trading using your own funds.
