Using fashion advice by body type is valuable because your clothing can help you to look slimmer, show off your assets, and give a balanced appearance to your whole body. There's so much more to fashion advice by body type than wearing black on the features you want to hide and lighter colors on the ones you'd like to show off.

Fashion Advice by Body Type Tips
Pear Shapes
If your body is a pear shape, you'll do best by avoiding too many details on the bottom. Skip skirts with ruffles and tiers as well as fitted pencil skirts and opt instead for A-line skirts and dresses, gypsy skirts, and maxi dresses. Balance things out further by choosing detail for the top of your ensemble, like a shirt in a bright color or pattern, a structured bodice, shrugs, voluminous sleeves, and interesting necklines. If it's cold out, don't choose a jacket with skinny lapels. Instead, go for wider ones that will add width across your top half, adding balance to your frame.
For jeans and trousers, you'll want to stay far away from those skinny jeans unless you really want to accent your pear shape. To add balance, choose pants with wider legs with no pockets directly on the sides (hips and thighs). The extra material will add width to your lower half.
Hourglass Shapes
You're in luck! You've got one of the most proportional body shapes and there aren't too many fashion looks you can't pull off. Belts around your narrow waist are your friend when you wear clothing that's a bit on the baggy side; they will allow you to show off your shape without looking as if you're trying too hard to be sexy in tight clothing. Wearing baggy clothing without any waist cinching can make you look larger than you are because your small waist will hide beneath the bulk.
Wear wrap dresses, wide-leg jeans or flares, fitted t-shirts and blouses that follow your curves, and dresses fitted at the top and flare out on the bottom. Skip empire waists, though, since you those tend to hide the waist rather than flaunt it. As for skirts, you can wear almost any type, pencil, A-line, etc, as long as there's not too much detail. Ruffles and tiers may add too much bulk to your bottom half so that your body no longer appears balanced.
Rectangle or Athletic Shapes
Lucky girl, you get to wear ruffles and fishtail skirts. In fact, you can get away with almost any style you want to try. If you have wide shoulders, you may want to avoid spaghetti straps in favor of something a little thicker. Boat neck styles can also make the shoulders appear wider.
Since rectangles and athletic shapes usually tend to want to create the illusion of curves, smart picks are skinny jeans, flowing pants, any skirt styles, round high necks, tailored jackets and shirts, and ruffles and ruching on shirts and skirts. Not so great choices are the ones that have no shape, like sheath dresses, tunics, low-rise baggy jeans, and dresses with dropped waists.
Apple Shapes
Apple shapes often want to disguise their tummies. There's often no distinct waistline, but apples often have great legs or chests to play up instead. In most cases, you can create a flattering silhouette by choosing tops (especially low cut or V-neck) that also hit low on the hips, like tunics. Empire waists on shirts and dresses will allow you to call attention to your chest while disguising the tummy and waist areas.
Avoid wearing pants with high waists because they will draw attention to your trouble areas. By choosing jeans or other pants with tapered or skinny legs, the midsection could look larger; instead, choose low-rise flares or boot cut styles that don't have any pleats or details on the front. Skirts should be close to knee-length in the very least in order to draw the eye down away from the midsection.
Strawberry Shapes
If you're larger on top than on bottom, you can add balance by wearing full skirts, wide-leg pants, bright or light colors on skirts and pants, pants that have pockets on the sides (cargos are perfect). Try to avoid skirts and pants that start at the hips and choose styles that start at the waist instead.
Avoid tops with too much detail (ruffles, slashes, off-the-shoulder styles, and puffy sleeves, for example) in favor of V-necks, one-shoulder tops, and cardigans left open because they direct the eye down rather than across. Wearing halters and shirts with wide straps will disguise broad shoulders, whereas spaghetti straps and cap-sleeved t-shirts will accentuate them.
Boost Your Confidence
Fashion advice by body type will ensure a boost in confidence. When you're playing up your body's assets and disguising the things you aren't as fond of, you're bound to feel great about yourself and comfortable with your wardrobe.
