Tips for Asking Good First Date Questions
Ask Open-ended Questions
Make sure that the questions you ask are as neutral as possible. If you want your date to share thoughts and opinions openly with you, you don't want to start the question with a negative thought. There is a difference between asking someone what they think of a book, movie, or something in the news and starting off by saying, "I really can't stand [insert topic here]...what do you think?
Most people in that situation would feel pressured to conform to what the other person's opinion is and they will hesitate to disagree with the person asking a question. This defeats the purpose of going out on a first date, which is to start to get to know someone to see if there is a good basis for building a relationship with the individual.
Don't Talk About Previous Relationships
Your date really doesn't want to hear about your ex. If you bring up the subject of previous relationships, it may appear that you still have feelings for your former partner or that you are bitter and not ready to be in a new relationship. Either way, this is not the impression you want to give to your date. No matter how sympathetic your date appears to be, this is not an appropriate subject of conversation. Avoid it like the plague.
Give Your Date the Chance to Talk About Him or Herself
Most people really do like to talk about themselves. If you give your date the opportunity to do so, you can learn a lot about him or her. Additionally, your companion will think that you are a wonderful listener and a great person to be around.
Ask Follow Up Questions that Show You Are Really Listening
This indicates that you are interested enough to try to really get to know the other person. This can be immensely flattering to your date, and may make you seem more attractive.
Examples of Good First Date Questions
How do you like to spend your time on weekends?
You want to get an idea of what this person's hobbies are and what kinds of activities he or she enjoy when not working. That way, you can find out whether the two of you have similar interests. Don't pretend to be interested in something your date likes just to impress him or her, since this can backfire.
Can you tell me about your family?
This question will give you some idea about the number of siblings your date has and whether he or she has a close relationship with them. You also want to get an idea of how your date treats his or her parents; this indicates of how they will behave with you as well.
If you could do any type of work, what would you choose?
Asking someone about his or her "dream job" gives you an idea about where this person's passions lie and what kind of life they would ideally like for themselves. The answer will give you some idea about your date's values. For example, if your date wantS to be a doctor, find out if he or she would choose the specialty that pays the most or work in a clinic caring for the needy? Those may be extreme examples but the answer will give you some good information about the kind of person you date is.
