Step-by-Step Free Eye Makeup Tips

Whether your goal is to enhance your look a little bit, or to improve upon nature and reinvent yourself, these eye makeup tips will give you a great beginning. Once you have the basics down, it is not difficult to go on to more advanced techniques and looks.

Eyeshadow

Figuring out what type of eyeshadow is best for you is the first step in creating your best possible look. Cream eyeshadows are better for younger skin, while matte shadow tends to crease less and looks great on more mature skin. Light shadows bring features forward and dark shades draw them back.

There are many techniques for applying eyeshadow to achieve different looks, but the basic technique involves these steps:

  • Give the eyelid a light coat of translucent powder, you may wish to dust some loose powder under your eye to catch loose shadow particles that you will dust away when you are finished applying your eye makeup.
  • Cover your entire lid with a light color eye shadow from your brow to your lashes.
  • Place a medium tone shadow on the area that is between your eyelashes and the crease of the brow bone.
  • You may wish to apply a darker shadow color along the crease of the brow bone, or use a small angled sponge applicator to apply a darker color along your lashline.
  • Gently blend the colors with a brush, or if you are using a cream shadow you may want to give it a light dusting of loose translucent powder.

Eyeliner

Eyeliner enhances lashes by making them stand out and appear thicker. Eyeliner comes in pencil and liquid and can be used to create subtle or dramatic effects.

Tips for applying pencil eyeliner:

  • With your ring finger, pull the skin of the eyelid taut. Be very gentle as you do not want to tear the delicate tissue around your eyes. Starting at the inner corner of your eyelid, draw a smooth, thin line along the upper eyelid right along the line of the lashes.
  • Gently smudge the line with a cotton swab, eye makeup applicator, or the smudger on the end to the pencil. This will soften the line, giving it a blended and natural appearance.
  • Lining the lower eyelid creates a more dramatic effect and should be done sparingly. Heavy eyeliner along the lower eyelid can create an owl or raccoon look, and that is not the "natural" appearance most ladies have in mind!
  • Lining the lower lid looks best when you add a few dots of color with the pencil close to the roots of your lashes, with more color toward the outer corner of the eye.

Tips for Liquid Eyeliner:

  • Liquid liner goes best with a glamorous, dramatic look.
  • Apply liquid liner in the same way you would pencil eyeliner, taking care to keep the lines thin and close to the eyelash roots.

Mascara

Mascara application can make your eyes go from pretty to "Wow!" if you take a little time and apply it correctly. Some suggestions for mascara application are:

  • Curl your lashes with an eyelash curler prior to applying mascara.
  • During the first coat of mascara begin with lash tips only. Then move on to applying it from root to tip.
  • Hold the brush horizontally, and then vertically. Roll it as you move from roots to tips. This will insure even coverage.
  • Allow the first mascara application to dry, and then apply the second. For thicker lashes, apply mascara to the top side of the eyelashes as well.
  • Apply mascara to the lower lashes sparingly. Hold the brush horizontally and apply it to each lash individually.
  • Once the mascara has dried give your lashes a comb through with an eyelash comb to separate the lashes and remove any clumps.
