Grilling Vegetables Tips for Beginners
If you have never grilled vegetables before, you can be confident knowing that it is easy. Here are some basic things you should know.
Tips for the Grill
- Using a silicone brush rather than one with bristles will keep the hairs from the basting brush out of your food.
- Start with a clean grill
- Spray the grill with a nonstick cooking spray. This will keep your vegetables from sticking.
- Use a medium hot fire.
Tips for Preparing the Vegetables
- Wash the vegetables thoroughly. Waxy coatings can taste funny or even cause the fire to flare up.
- It is unnecessary to peel most vegetables.
- Cut up thick vegetables.
- Keep cut vegetables the same size as much as possible.
- Slicing vegetables like zucchini lengthwise will help it stay on the grilling surface.
- You can lightly brush vegetables with olive oil to help them cook, give them a nice texture, and add flavor.
Tips for Grilling
- You can add additional flavor with flavored wood chips in the grill.
- Using skewers for smaller vegetables, like cherry tomatoes, will keep them from falling through the grate.
- A grill basket is a great way to grill smaller vegetables.
- Start with the vegetables that take the longest to cook first and then add the others.
- Turn the vegetables often as they cook.
- Brush with more oil or marinade often.
- It is best to use tongs to turn most vegetables. A fork can cause the tender vegetables to break apart.
Are There Any Other Tips for Grilling Vegetables?
Some vegetables do require a little more preparation than others do when you are grilling. Here are some grilling vegetables tips for specific items.
Corn
Remove the silk from corn carefully. You can either grill the corn in the husks or out, depending on the flavor that you want. You can even shuck it, rub with butter and seasonings, and then grill it wrapped in aluminum foil.
Keeping the corn wrapped in the husk or foil will result in tender corn with a traditional, sweet flavor. Shucking it, rubbing with oil or butter, and placing on a hot grill will leave caramelized grill marks and impart a slight smoky flavor.
Potatoes
You can bake potatoes right on the grill, or slice them. The method will depend on the dish that you want to make.
- Parboil sliced potatoes before rubbing them with oil and grilling to cut down on time.
- Sprinkling potato slices with rosemary and garlic adds a nice flavor.
Zucchini and Other Summer Squash
Either slice zucchini lengthwise or cut in chunks and place on a skewer for best results.
- Marinate in Italian salad dressing for fifteen minutes before grilling.
- Make vegetable kabobs by using zucchini, onion, button mushrooms, and cherry tomatoes on a skewer. Marinating them for up to a half an hour before grilling gives additional flavor.
Mushrooms
All mushrooms give an excellent flavor when grilled. Portobello mushrooms are smoky, beefy, and complex when grilled whole with a mild cheese melted on top. Button mushrooms are perfect left whole, marinated in Italian dressing, and grilled with other vegetables for a kabob.
- Grill mushrooms whole or sliced.
- To prepare for grilling, just wipe with damp paper towel and trim the base of the mushroom stem.
Peppers
Grill any kind of pepper successfully. Be careful of the smoke that may occur when you are grilling hot peppers like jalapenos, though. The smoke contains compounds that can burn your eyes.
- Just slice and seed the peppers. Remove the interior ribs.
- For the whole pepper, just place it on the grill and turn often with tongs. Allowing the skin to become blackened in places will add flavor.
- Place the roasted peppers in a bag for fifteen minutes. This allows them to steam and then easily slip off the skin.
