Hair Cutting Tips

Know Your Face Shape

A cut that looks great on your best friend may not be so flattering on you. Pull your hair back and look in the mirror. Next, trace the outline of your face (not your head) with a bar of soap. Now you can see your face shape clearly outlined on your mirror’s glass.

Hair Cutting Tips for a Round Face

Round faces look good in long or short hair that has layer added at the top to create volume. This will help to lengthen the look of your face.

Hair Cutting tips for an Oval Face

Oval faces look best when hair is an even length all around. Try adding wispy bangs for a flirty look.

Tips for Long Faces

If you have a long face, avoid bob styles, short bangs or too much volume on the top of your head. Instead, opt to create more volume on the sides by adding layers.

Tips for Square Faces

Avoid short cuts if you have a square face. Add volume on top with layers to add length to your face. Soft bangs or a side part also work well for square face shapes.

Find a Good Stylist

The most important hair cutting tip but is often the most difficult, finding a good stylist isn’t easy. Ask around to see who your friends like. This may be accomplished through trial and error, but once you find a good stylist, she is worth her weight in gold.

Know Your Hair Type

One of the more important hair cutting tips is to know what your hair type is. Styles that look fantastic on someone with fine hair may look out of balance on someone with coarse hair. Straight hair looks good in styles that may not look right on curly hair. If you aren’t sure, ask your stylist.

Have an Idea of what You Want

It’s never a good idea to tell your stylist that she can do “whatever”. She may have very different ideas than you do on what is attractive. Flip through some magazines and get an idea of the type of style that you would like to achieve.

Ask for Advice

Once you have a few ideas, ask your stylist for advice on what will look best on you. A good stylist will take your face shape and hair type into consideration as well as your lifestyle. Some cuts require more upkeep than others. So listen to her advice and hair cutting tips.

Bring a Book

Not to keep you occupied, to show your stylist. Showing pictures of styles you like will help your stylist to see the type of cut that you need. Like they say, a picture really is worth a thousand words.

Don’t be Intimidated

If you want three inches taken off of the length of your hair and your stylist only wants to take one, stand your ground. Granted, she is the professional; but it’s “your” hair. You have to go home with it so make sure that you get what you want.

Be Willing to Compromise

It doesn’t have to be all or nothing. If a cut that you love is going to make your face look too round, you probably will appreciate knowing this before your hair is cut. Tell your stylist what you want, but also be willing to consider her hair cutting tips before you make a final decision.

Take Note of Products

Do you ever wonder why your hair looks great after it is cut, but once you get home you can never get that look again? It’s all in the products. As your stylist works on your hair ask her questions. Why is she using a round brush? Is there a diffuser on the blow dryer? What kind of gel is she using? She will be happy to give you advice on products, tools and even hair color advice if you just ask.
