Hard to Answer Riddles Advice

If you have a hard time figuring out the answers to riddles, don’t try to hurry. The answer will come to you if you let your mind relax, instead of trying to force it.

What is a Riddle?

I am not what I am but to make you think. The answer may be easy or hard, but it’s always a duh. What am I?

Riddles often talk in circles. They use double meaning to make you think about the answer. Simply put, a riddle is a play on words.

What Type of Riddle is it?

There are different types of riddles that have different ways to solve them.

  • Logic Riddles: Often the answer is found inside the text.
  • Math Riddles: Math riddles use numbers, sequences, sizes, and orders to stump you. You may need paper and a pencil to answer these.
  • True Riddles: These answers are usually obvious, but the context makes you doubt your answer.

How Can I Better Understand a Riddle?

Listen carefully. Every riddle contains an important clue to the answer. Ask for the joker to repeat the riddle, or reread it one or two times for the clues.

Why Can't I Understand Riddles?

Remember, a riddle is never what it seems. For example: "What has a mouth but can't chew?" When you think of a mouth, you first think of people, but they all can chew. Next you think of animals. Ask yourself, what else “mouth” can mean. It doesn’t have to refer to the one on your face.

Why Do Riddles Play on Words?

That is part of the fun. Review the different definitions of the words in the riddle. If you need to, you can use a thesaurus to help you find other meanings. A mouth is something you use to eat, or it can also be a part of a river.

How Can I Solve a Riddle?

Look at the Clues

"What stinks when living and smells good when dead?"

How many clues can you find in your riddle? Figure out the clues and look at them separately.

  1. What stinks when living?
  2. What smells good when dead?

If you drive by livestock this one may be easy to figure out.

Look for Opposites

Go back to “What is broken every time it’s spoken?” Take a look at the words used: Broken and Spoken. What are the opposites, fixed and silent.

Simplify

Hard to answer riddles often include the answer just to fool you. “Who is buried in Grant’s Tomb?” can stump you for hours if you have never heard this riddle before. Yet the answer is very obvious.

Answer the Question

Sometimes the answer is very obvious, but we are trying to read into it. For example, "How many letters are in The Alphabet”? The answer the riddler wants is not 26.

Walk Away

If you are finding yourself frustrated trying to find the answer, walking away can help. Clearing your mind will allow you to look at the riddle from a different perspective. Sometimes the answer will even come to you while you are sleeping.

Math Riddles

Math riddles have their own formula to solving them. Again, they are often more simple than they seem.

"If you can buy eight eggs for 26 cents, how many can you buy for a cent and a quarter?"

  • Take it one step at a time.
  • Write it out if you need to.
  • Don’t think so hard.
  • Look for the answer in the puzzle.
  • Walk away and come back to it

Why Do They Use Riddles in Video Games?

Many video games include riddles that need to be solved to get to the next level or open new worlds. This is a great way to incorporate hand-eye coordination with brain power. Treat these riddles like you would any riddle. Keep your eyes open and don't take anything for granted.

Why are Riddles Important?

Riddles can help increase your brain activity. They are a popular oral tradition in many cultures and are even touched upon in fairy tales and nursery rhymes.

“Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall,

Humpty Dumpty had a great fall;

All the king's horses and all the king's men

Cannot put Humpty Dumpty together again.”
