Here are some questions that you might not think about asking before marriage.
Friends and Social Life
- Are you going to continue to see your single, opposite sex friends after marriage?
- Do you mind if I have lunch with my single friends of the opposite sex?
- How often do you like to socialize?
- Do you expect me to accompany you to your business events?
- What is your favorite way to spend a day off?
Domestic Bliss
- Where do you squeeze the toothpaste tube?
- How should the chores be divided up?
- Are you a night owl or an early bird?
- How often should a house be cleaned in your opinion?
- On a scale of one to five how important is a clean house?
- What type of décor do you prefer? (Contemporary, country, modern, etc.)
- What are your favorite colors for a home?
- Where would your dream house be located?
- Which television shows do you feel are “can't miss” shows?
- Do you want a pet?
- If so, what type of pet?
- Should pets be inside or outside only?
Parenting
- How many children do you want to have?
- How long should a couple be married before having their first child?
- How should discipline be handled?
- Who should be the final authority in the home?
- Should one parent give up their career to parent the children?
- If so, which parent should it be?
- If a child is sick and both parents work who stays home with her?
- Public, private, or home school?
Finances
- How should financial decisions be made?
- If an agreement can't be reached who gets final say?
- What type of investing should be done?
- How much money should go in to savings?
- How much should go to charity, tithing, or social support issues?
- Should finances be kept separate or pooled together?
- Who balances the checkbook?
- How do you feel about credit and debt?
- How should retirement be funded?
Religion
- Should the wedding ceremony be held in a church?
- If so, what denomination?
- If a couple is of different religions should one change to the other's religious preference?
- If a couple is of different religions which should the children be raised in?
- What religious holidays should be celebrated?
- If one partner has dietary restrictions because of their religion should both follow those food laws?
Extended Family
- How should extended family be handled?
- How often should a couple spend time with parents/siblings/in-laws?
- Where should holidays be spent?
- If holidays are to be spent with family how should that be arranged in order to be kept “fair”?
Difficult, but Important Questions
- If there was an accident would you want to be on life support?
- Do you want to donate organs?
- Who should be named as guardian of the children?
- Do you want to be buried or cremated?
- If your heart stops do you want to be resuscitated?
Why Ask Questions?
So why should you ask pre marriage questions?
A relationship is different before marriage, even if you have lived together for some time. Over a period of years, things that seemed not to be an issue at first may become a problem. If you ask questions, talk about your answers and solve potential problems before they happen you have a better chance of working through problems that do come up. This whole process will be a learning experience in itself to learn how the two of you deal with differences.
