Frequently Asked Teen Questions

The teen years are some of the most exciting in life, but there are also many teen questions that need to be answered. If you have the answer to some teen questions, please let us know.

My Parents Always Want to Know What I’m Doing

Sometimes it seems like parents don’t allow you any privacy. They want to know where you are going, who you are going with and when you’ll be back. Your parents do this because they love you and are trying to protect you. If you feel like they are too overbearing, sit down and talk about it with them. Instead of always fighting with each other, try to reach a compromise that will allow you some privacy while keeping your parents satisfied.

How to Tell if Someone Likes You

Teens show their interest in someone in many different ways, depending upon age and experience. One of the surest ways of gauging interest is eye contact. Even the shyest teen will have trouble keeping their eyes off you if they are interested. Also watch for how they act around you. If he or she is always trying to do nice things for you, or is asking you a lot of questions, chances are there’s some interest. But, also watch for other behavior, such as making lots of jokes around you or even teasing you.

What Do I Want to Be When I Grow Up?

This question is likely to follow you around long after you graduate from high school. Being happy in your career/job usually involves doing something you enjoy, or doing something you’re good at. Most people are happiest when they are using their best skills. It’s even better if those skills match a career field that you enjoy. While pursuing a dream can have it's benefits, don’t chase after something that you are not skilled to do. For example, if you like helping people and are thinking of being a doctor, that may not be such a good idea if you get poor grades in science. Instead, look at other careers that will allow you to still help people while being a better fit for your skills.

How Do I Pick Which College to Go to?

Picking a college can be very challenging. The first thing you should do is make sure you can afford the school. There is no sense in getting excited about a place that you can’t attend. Next, make sure you visit the campus, preferably while classes are in session. Walk around and visit the nearby city as well. Try to establish whether you feel comfortable enough to live there for the next four or more years. Finally, look and see if they have the program/major you are thinking of studying. Look at everything that’s offered because you may change majors several times before choosing one.

Why Should I Go to School?

The obvious reason is that to minimally qualify for a job, you need to graduate. There are many other reasons to stay in school, however. When you finish and receive your diploma, you’ll feel a sense of accomplishment that can be quite powerful. Second, school helps prepare you for the world that you are about to become a part of. Even if you feel your classes have no relevance, the act of showing up each day and learning something new is what life after graduation is all about.

How to Handle Peer Pressure

Wanting to fit in with a group and be accepted is a strong desire for many teens, but sometimes to fit in you’ll be asked to do things you’d rather not do. If the peer pressure catches you off guard, such as drugs being passed around when you weren’t expecting it, try deflecting the pressure away from you and toward someone convenient, like your parents. Mention you forgot something you have to do for your parents and that you have to leave. By escaping the situation, you give yourself a chance to think about what happened—and how you’ll handle it next time. Never do something that you don’t want to do. A true friend isn’t going to make friendship a conditional offer based on you doing something.

How to Ask Someone to a Dance

The best way to ask someone to a dance is to just ask. If you are afraid of being rejected, then the more casually you ask, the less uncomfortable you’ll be if you are turned down. If you are fairly certain that your invitation will be accepted, then consider asking the question more creatively.
