The Best Tips for Dating Older Men
When Does a Man Become an “Older Man?”
In theory, any man who is older than you can classify as an older man, but these tips pertain to men who are in their fifties and beyond. This certainly doesn’t mean that men in their fifties are “old,” but society does consider men of this age (and older) to be beyond the traditional age for first-time marriage.
What Are Older Men Like?
There is not one singular and definitive characteristic that describes all older men. You just can’t lump such a large group of people into one category and expect them to all behave a certain way. The majority of older men, however, do fall within certain predictable behavioral patterns:
- Older men like to get intimate, just like younger men. Don’t believe the myth that older people do not want to have sex. Older men may not have the intense sexual drive of younger men, but this does not mean they give up on sex altogether.
- Older men know what they want. After years of relationship experience, many older men have a concrete idea of what type of woman they want and what they expect from a relationship. This does not mean that all older men are inflexible when it comes to relationships, but most older men have a good idea of what they are looking for.
- Older men have experience. The same relationship history that allows older men to be sure of their dating preferences may be a matter of contention with some women. It’s important to be realistic and understand that many older men will have been in numerous relationships, may also have been married prevously, and might have children and grandchildren.
Of course, not every older man falls into these categories. The important thing to remember when reading through these tips for dating older men is that every man is different, regardless of age.
Are All Older Men Bitter Divorcés?
Not all older men are bitter divorcés. It’s true that some older men have survived dramatic divorces, but many men bounce back from these events and view them as learning experiences. You should not approach all older men as though they will automatically jump to the defensive. Remember, not all older men have gone through bitter divorces.
How Should I Approach a Widower?
If you decide to ask a widower out on a date there are a few things you should consider:
- How long has it been since his wife passed away?
- Will this be his first date since his wife died?
- Are you a widow?
The passing of time helps to heal emotional wounds, so if it has been quite some time since your potential date’s wife passed away then you will probably find that it’s less of an issue than if his wife’s death is a relatively recent occurrence. If this is his first date since his wife died then be prepared for him to either tell you how awkward he feels or to demonstrate his discomfort in his actions. If you are a widow then you may be able to better understand what he is going through, but this does not necessarily mean that you should give up on a man because he’s a widower and you’re not. The key to dating a widower is to be as understanding as possible. There are indeed some men who will never get over the death of a spouse, and if this is the case with your potential beau then try not to take it personally.
How Should I Approach an Older Man?
Since every older man is different, you cannot act one certain way and expect every older man to swoon. Instead of trying to be someone you’re not, just be yourself. Having self-confidence is almost always a winning characteristic to display when approaching an older man. After all, would you really want to have a relationship with a man who prefers for his girlfriend to be meek and unsure of herself?
