Volleyball Rules and Tips: Rules

What are the Playing Field Regulations?

There are regulations governing court measurements and net height. Volleyball courts are required to be 29 feet by 59 feet wide. Net heights vary for men and women. For men and co-ed teams, regulation net height is 7 feet 11 inches. For women, the regulation height is 7 feet 4 inches.

What are the Serving Rules?

The decision about which team serves first is determined by a volley. The server must be behind service line before making contact with the ball. After contact is made, server can be over the line. The ball can be served overhand or underhand and must be able to be seen by opponents.

How is Scoring Done?

  • Rally Scoring - when a side doesn't return the ball a point is scored each time.
  • Side-out scoring - when either side hits the ball out of bounds or misses, the other side will score. On a serve, the defense will receive the serve and a point.
  • Depending on the rules being observed, some games are played to 15 points and others are played to 25.
  • A side must win by 2 points.
  • Most matches are played best 3 out of 5. Some are best 2 out of 3

How Do You Rotate?

Team members will rotate clockwise when they win the serve.

What are the Rules for Volleying?

Volleying is the main portion of playing the game. While serving strikes up some strategy, volleying is used set up and attack an opponent. There is a maximum of three hits per side and the same player cannot hit the ball twice in a row. The same player may take the first hit, then the third hit.

Are There Restrictions on Attacks?

From the center line (the net) there is an "attack" line that designates 3 feet where attacks are allowed to happen. At high school and some college levels, a serve cannot be attacked by setting up a spike, only a bump.

What Kind of Violations are There?

  • Reaching over and under the net.
  • Stepping over or on the line on a serve before contact with the ball is made.
  • Not getting the ball over the net on a serve.
  • Carrying/palming or throwing the ball.
  • Touching the net with any part of the body.
  • Being out of rotation.

Volleyball Tips

After reading the following tips, make sure that you ask other players and coaches for advice on other volleyball rules and tips. The more tips you pick up, the better able you will be able to improve your playing skills.

How can I Block Better?

Keep tabs on where the ball is set. The more the ball is set outside the more of an angle inside. When jumping up to block, keep two things in mind: keep your hands no wider than the ball and jump when the spiker jumps.

How can I Serve Better?

If you are serving underhand, make sure the ball hits the flat part of your hand from the second thumb joint to the wrist. Hitting that spot will give you more control over placement. Vary your contact so your opponents can't get your timing.

How can I Spike Better?

Spiking takes practice. It's important to work on timing your jump right so you are able to spike the ball at it's peak. Doing so will get you best options for speed and placement. When it comes to improving your spiking ability, practice can make perfect. The more you practice spiking, the more your body will get use to the motion and the quicker and stronger you will be at the net.

What's the Best Way to Pass and Set?

Keeping your eyes on the ball is the most important factor in passing and setting the ball well. The best way to do this is the bend your knees when you are ready to hit the ball. It's just pure dynamics because you are able to look upwards much easier than if you stayed standing straight. Also, try to position yourself so you are able to make contact with the ball near waist level. Making contact higher or lower will give you poor control and poor height, if any at all.

What are Some Volleyball Terms

  • Ace - when no one is able to touch a serve
  • Dig - when a player makes a hard save from a spike.
  • Kill - when a point is made from a spike
  • Roof - when a player is higher than the net and blocks the ball.
  • Side-out - when one side makes a mistake and the ball goes to the opponent.
