Wavy Hair Tips and Advice

Work with Your Waves

Rather than spending a lot of time fighting against the natural waves in your hair, have your hairdresser give you a layered cut. A medium-length hair cut will give you some different styling options.

Use a Moisturizing Shampoo and Conditioner

Wavy hair has a tendency to dry out; using a moisturizing shampoo and a conditioner will help keep your hair looking healthy.

Choose the Right Comb

The right comb can make a difference in your final look. A comb with wide gaps between teeth is a better choice than one with narrow gaps. The narrow-gap comb can get easily caught in your hair. Using one with wide gaps makes combing easier and will not pull the waves out of place.

Let Wavy Hair Dry Naturally

Air drying your hair will give it a more natural look. If you decide to use a blow dryer, use a diffuser. Lean forward and dry the hair from the base of the hair on up.

Use Styling Wax

Using a little styling wax will help your waves hold their shape.

Don't Use a Brush on Wavy Hair

Instead, use your fingers or an Afro comb to position the hair into place.

Put Your Hair in a Pony Tail

Here is a simple way to create a wavy style: While your hair is wet, put it into a pony tail. Then add hair elastics at intervals from the top of the pony tail to the ends of the hair. When the hair is dry, remove the elastics and finger comb to loosen the waves.

Twirl Your Hair for a Slightly Wavy Look

Another option for getting a wavy look is to apply a hair gel to hair that is slightly damp. Run your fingers through the hair; twirl small sections around your finger as you do. The gel will hold these portions of your hair in place. After you have finished twirling the hair, let it air dry for approximately 30 minutes.

Pin Curl Your Way to a Wavy 'Do

Separate damp hair into strands and pin into place. Allow the hair to air dry and unpin it carefully. Shake the strands out and apply a spray-on styling gel to hold the waves in place.

Hot Rollers are Making a Comeback

Hot rollers, like the ones found at Folica.com, can be used for everything from tight curls to a wavy glamorous look. Hair needs to be dry before putting the rollers in. Start with the hair on the crown, placing rollers from front to back first. Hair at the back and sides of the head should be rolled from the top to the bottom.

For a more interesting look, stagger the curlers slightly as opposed to placing them in straight rows on the head. Don't use a brush after removing the rollers; it will make your hair frizzy. Instead, lean forward and finger-comb the hair from the back of the head toward the top. This will also give volume to your hairstyle.

Straighten Wavy Hair with Straightening Gel

The preceding wavy hair tips were for those who want a wavy look, but here is one for those who want to change to a straight style: start with a straightening shampoo and conditioner. While hair is slightly damp, comb it through and apply a mousse or gel (hair straightening) starting at the roots and working up to the tips.

Divide the hair into small sections and blow dry at a medium setting. Repeat until all sections have been dried on this manner.
