Windows 20000 Professional Tips and Advice

Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional controls your computer's hardware and allows users to run more than one computer program at once.

This operating system is user friendly and no longer requires lengthy commands. Instead, the user can use either the mouse or the keyboard to enter commands.

Connects to a NetWare Server

An important Windows 2000 Professional tip for installing client services is that the icon called My Network Places is now used instead of Network Neighborhood. After clicking on My Network Places, the next step is to go to Properties. A dialogue box will pop up, which will allow you to install the NetWare client.

Multiple Operations

You can launch multiple operations at the same time.

The first step is to hold down the Shift key, then press Start. Point to the following in order:

  • Programs
  • Accessories
  • Calculator
  • Notepad
  • WordPad

Continue holding down the Shift key and point to Programs. Then point and click on, in the following order:

  • Accessories
  • System Tools
  • Schedule Tasks

To end the process, release the Shift key.

Accessing Control Panel

The first step is to right-click the task bar. Choose Toolbars/New Toolbar. Next, the user chooses My Computer. Right-click on the Desktop and create a New Folder. Name the folder Control Panel.{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D}.

When you highlight the new Control Panel folder and click OK, all of the items on the Control Panel are in one convenient location.

Create Emergency Repair Disc

To create an Emergency Repair Disc, go to Start, then Run, and type ntbackup. The next step in the process is to choose Emergency Repair Disk from the Options list. The Backup the Registry to Repair Directory option should be checked.

No Administrator Tools on the Start Menu

Administrator Tools do not normally appear on the Start menu. Add an Administrator Tools folder to the Start menu as follows:

  • Right-click on the task bar and select Properties
  • Select Advanced and then click on Display Administrative Tools

You also have the option of creating a shortcut on the desktop or the taskbar to the Administrative Tools folder:

  • Open up the Control Panel
  • Right-drag the Administrative Tools icon to the desktop or the taskbar
  • Click on Create Shortcut(s) Here
  • Give the shortcut a name of your choice

Add One (or More) Monitors

Windows 2000 Professional allows users to add additional monitors. Here are the steps involved:

  • Add the PCI for additional display adapters (system needs to be shut down first)
  • Restart the system; Windows 2000 will install the drivers for the adapters
  • The resolution for the adapters is set in the same way as for a single adapter

You can drag the monitor icons onto the desktop to arrange them in the same way as the physical layout of your network. The primary monitor can be indicated by using the Use this Device as the Primary Monitor option.

If you would like to enable or disable an adapter, use the Extend my Windows Desktop onto this Monitor option.
